CHRONOLOGY QUIZ -- Famous Paintings Edition

CHRONOLOGY QUIZ -- Famous paintings edition

In the tradition -- or trying to foment one -- of Stooopid's very entertaining and challenging chronology quiz......

Below, you'll find 12 paintings, all of which were painted within the last 125 years. If you have some background in art history, I suspect that you'll recognize many or most of these paintings, or at least have a reasonable guess on the artist, but more importantly in this quiz, the period during which it was created.

OBJECT: List the 12 paintings, in chronological order from earliest to latest. I'm not asking for the artists or titles; order the letters that precede each painting only. There are no intended "gotchas" in the group. At least 4 years separates any two consecutive paintings chronologically, and the paintings are generally representative of that artist's style at the time.

Any comments you want to include are welcome, but at the top of your submission, give your answers in this form: H B C I J L A D G F K E. Please double and triple check your answers, so that you don't duplicate letters or leave any out.

SCORING: For each of the 12 correct answers in order, your score for that answer will follow this pattern:
0, if you got the position exactly right
1, if you are 1 position away, either before or after
3, if you are 2 positions away, either before or after
2 more points for each additional position

Since I'm guessing that there may be relatively few answers that are wildly off, this pattern spreads the net scores a little by giving a relative bonus to being within 1 of the actual position.

Your 12 individual scores are added together, along with the optional bonus answer (see below) to get your overall score. Lowest overall score wins. Ties are broken by the number of 0 scores (the more, the better), then the number of 1 scores, etc.

Example: If you were shown 4 paintings, with the correct order A B C D, and you give B D C A as your answer, here's how we score it:

First correct answer (A) is 3 positions later in your list, so score as 1 + 2 + 2 = 5
Second correct answer (B) is 1 position earlier in your list, so score as 1
Third correct answer (C) is in the correct position, so score as 0
Fourth correct answer (D) is 2 positions earlier on your list, so score as 1 + 2 = 3

Your total score would be 5 + 1 + 0 + 3 = 9

BONUS: (This is optional.) How many of these paintings were created between 1920 and 1960? If you're correct, I'll subtract 3 points from your score…but if you're wrong, I'll add 2 points.

No outside help, as on the other board quizzes, right??? PM me with your answers by 11:59pm (Pacific time) on Friday, October 23rd.

A     B     C

D     E    F

G    H    I

J    K    L

This is a horrible quiz for me. I know nothing about art and couldnot place more than one or two of these in the correct era if my life depneded on it.

But I'll still enter.

I think I entered, but the Board burped. Please let me know if I need to re-send

Evidently, the board burped with the correct velocity vector. Entry received.

That's the spirit! I've already gotten entries from several regulars who feel far less than confident with art history. Granted that this quiz was not going to be in too many wheelhouses, so don't feel bad if most of this is a blur. (Kinda like me with Narnia-type questions.)

Let me reiterate that there are no trick questions. All the paintings are quite representative of the artists and of the period in which in which they were painted.... no retro or obscure artists.

Entered. Didn't notice the optional bonus until after I sent it in; just as well, I'd have answered that wrong too

I did answer the bonus, working on the theory that I will do so miserably, a few more points off won't matter.

I really like this quiz! I recognize 11 of the 12 works - now just have to think about the time frames somewhat, which is a lot more difficult. Too bad (for me anyway) you didn't ask for the artists and/or titles as bonuses or something.

I considered working the artists and/or titles into the bonus, but realized that it might get too complicated on my end. I tried to come up with a fully-automated spreadsheet design to do the scoring, but that proved elusive, so I settled on a less-complicated spreadsheet (and bonus question) to keep my sanity.

After twice watching the whole history series, "The Impressionists", I know... almost one. Art info just doesn't stick, perhaps because there's so little art info in my head to stick it to.

I recognize a couple famous others, but I have little idea when they were painted. My decision to skip the bonus may be the only thing to keep me off the bottom again. I'll be pleased if my score stays under 100.

FYI: If you want to see a bigger version of a painting, do a View Image (right click and select from the menu in Windows... don't know on Apple) or a Copy Image Location into a new window (same re Windows and Apple.)

The tally is up to 21 submissions in a little over 2 days.... a very good turnout so far. We definitely have some modern art aficionados here (or incredibly good guessers), but many, many more boardies just willing to give it the ol' college try, so don't be shy. Random.org has also made an appearance.

P.S. If you'd be satisfied tying kejo, then look a couple of posts up where he committed a no-no. (But sssssshhhhhhhhh, let this be a secret just between us: only 2 are in the correct position.)

I'm saving random.org for the abstract expressionist movement.

My mother is an artist, I've been to several of the museums that made the TD 42 list, and still I only recognized 6 of the paintings. And figuring out when they were done is a whole nother matter.

OK, a quickie question for you, if you haven't looked things up yet. I guess I coulda asked something like this as a bonus question initially, but too late now.

Take the first letter of the last name for each artist represented in this quiz. Which two letters occur more than once? Don't post anything on the thread, please, as it could provide unfair hints to those who haven't entered yet. I'll give the answer at the beginning of the reveal.

ETA: This was intended as a self test; I didn't expect that you would PM answers. (But if you wanna, it's OK.)

26 entrants so far, in submission order:

Easy peasy. A tag-on question: those two letters form the initials of which Scottish painter?

Well, I got the two letters, but I have absolutely no idea on the Scottish painter with those initials.

I can think of two British artists with those initials, but I think they're both English. I may be wrong or you may be thinking of someone else.

The latter, without question. Good on ya for getting two English artists, though.
