OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny Gilbert. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the second of our quarterfinal matches in this year's College Championship. A lot for these people to cheer about today because they have a young lady--a local representative--in Amanda, but we have Jeff and Vicky as well, and I'll wish all three of you good luck and put you to work now in the Jeopardy! Round.

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
FLOWER (5/5)
DOUGH (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
CHEESE (5/5)
THE UPPER CRUST (4/5)
"DEEP" DISH (4/5)
WE WANT PISA! (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

A more evenly matched round than it would seem with Jeff's dominance at the signaling device; Vicky was also fast, and picked up a number of high-value clues and kept a good total.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jeff found the Daily Double on the 16th clue. Amanda had $800, Jeff had $3,200, and Vicky had $1,800. Jeff wagered $1,500.

DOUGH $800: Cherry blossoms are featured on the back of the coin worth 100 of these

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK

Vicky: $1,800
Amanda: $800

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

COME FOR THE FISH & CHIPS, STAY TO GET YOUR BUTT KICKED ...BY A GIRL

Alex: Vicky Manos is a sophomore at St. John's University College of Pharmacy. She is also an arm wrestler. Come on, get it up. [Alex pretends to arm wrestle with Vicky] You finished in second place in a tournament?

Vicky: Yeah. We were at the Scottish festival. We go for the fish and chips. I was trying to get my dad to sign up for it but I ended up signing up, and I took second place.

Alex: Well, good for you.

...BY A GIRL

Alex: Jeff Love is from Burlingame, California. He's a sophomore at Stanford. And I'm curious about this. Last year, it says here, you were voted by your dorm most awkward on national television. What was the reference to?

Jeff: Actually, my girlfriend was on college Wheel of Fortune. When she won the game and was going to the bonus round, her family went down, and I went down. And as she won the final round, they showed her family. Let's just say I didn't look too comfortable with myself. I was kind of in a state of shock. So I'm here to redeem myself.

Alex: How much did she win on Wheel of Fortune?

Jeff: A lot more than I'm gonna win here.

Alex: That's a negative attitude. You want to be positive all the time. Anything can happen on this show.

...BY A BOY

Alex: Amanda Nowotny is from New Castle. She's a sophomore right here at the University of Pittsburgh. [Audience cheers] Not only is this young lady bright, she's willing to take a chance. You made a serious wager not too long ago. Tell the folks about that.

Amanda: Well, a couple of years ago I had this friend who kept wanting to cut my hair. So I made a bet with him that if he did better at this science competition than I did, he could take off 3 inches of my hair 'cause I didn't think I would actually lose. And I did.

Alex: And did he take off just 3 inches?

Amanda: No, I never paid up.

Alex: Oh, that's why your hair is so long and beautiful today.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"DEEP" DISH $1000: People on bed rest are at risk for a serious blood clot in the legs known as DVT, short for this

THE UPPER CRUST $1000: (Hi, I'm Anderson Cooper of CNN.) My great-great-great grandfather was this shipping & railroad magnate known as "The Commodore"
(Jeff: Who is Vanderbilt?)
(Alex: Which one?)
(Jeff: ...Andrew.)

DOUGH $1000: The name of this unit of currency used in Libya is from the Latin for "ten"

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jeff: $6,300
Vicky: $4,600
Amanda: $2,000

Vicky: 7 R (including 1 rebound), 1 W (including 1 DD)
Jeff: 6 R, 2 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 6
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash™: $10,800

Amanda was in the ascendant while Jeff fell by the wayside this round. Vicky found a DD but couldn't score on it, but she stuck to it and positioned herself well for Final.

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Vicky snagged the next Daily Double on the 14th clue. Amanda had $800, Jeff had $9,100, and Vicky had $12,200. Vicky wagered $2,000.

THE 20th CENTURY $1600: On Feb. 20, 1962 the destroyer USS Noa found him floating in the Atlantic after a journey of 75,679 miles
(Vicky: Who is Cousteau?)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Amanda snagged the next Daily Double on the 20th clue. Amanda had $2,000, Jeff had $7,900, and Vicky had $10,200. Far behind but not wanting to put herself out of commission entirely with a True Daily Double wager, Amanda risked $1,800.

THEIR ALMA MATERS $1200: JFK (John Forbes Kerry)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
ALBUMS $2000: "All I Have" with LL Cool J was a last-minute addition to this Jennifer Lopez CD
(Amanda: What is J to tha L O!?)

THE 20th CENTURY $2000: In 1974 the military overthrew this African leader who claimed to be descended from Solomon & the Queen of Sheba
(Jeff: Who is Idi Amin?)

THEIR ALMA MATERS $1600: Radio's Garrison Keillor

THEIR ALMA MATERS $2000: Author Ralph Ellison

HOUSES OF WORSHIP $2000: The Church of this is Jerusalem is said to be built over the site where Jesus was entombed after his crucifixion
(Amanda: What is the Church of the Nativity?)

COMPUTER JARGON $1200: Common fiery name for a nasty or insulting email or newsgroup message

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Jeff: $11,500 (lock game)
Vicky: $10,200
Amanda: $5,800

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
BRITISH NOVEL CHARACTERS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Three-quarters for first place.
Jeff: $11,500 is probably enough to secure yourself a wildcard slot. Wager $101 to force Amanda to risk everything and get Final right in order to pull ahead of you.
Vicky: Under normal circumstances $10,200 would be enough to stay put at for the wildcard position, but it may not be enough given that Jeff is ahead of you. You could try covering his zero bet by wagering $1,301.
Amanda: $5,800 probably won't cut it for a wildcard slot. Try betting $5,798 and hope for the best.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
W.E. Henley, the amputee who wrote the brave poem "Invictus", inspired this character in an 1883 book

FINAL SCORES
Amanda: $5,800 - $5,800 = $0 (Who is Oliver Twist)
Vicky: $10,200 - $800 = $9,400 (Who ?) (Semifinalist)
Jeff: $11,500 - $4,000 = $7,500 (Who is Tiny Tim)

Total Potential Lach Trash™: $13,800

CORYAT SCORES (See this link for an explanatione of Karl Coryat's scoring system, in the paragraph that begins with "Here's how to keep score.")
Vicky: $12,200, 15 R, 2 W (including 1 DD)
Jeff: $10,800, 21 R (including 1 DD), 4 W
Amanda: $5,200, 14 R (including 1 DD), 5 W
Combined Coryat: $28,200
($54,000 is the largest possible Coryat score in a game. The Combined Coryat will equal this when all clues are uncovered, no player gives an incorrect response [including on DDs], and there are no Triple Stumpers.)

BATTING AVERAGES (The numerator is the total number of correct responses including the DDs and Final. The denominator is 58 [the number of non-DD clues in the game] plus the number of DDs the player uncovered; the team denominator for a game is always 63 [the total number of potential correct responses], even if clues are left unrevealed or players don't stick around for Final Jeopardy! Thus the batting average can serve as a measure of game efficiency: games in which many clues are left unrevealed will have lower team batting averages.)
Jeff: 21/59 = .356
Vicky: 15/59 = .254
Amanda: 14/59 = .237
Team: 50/63 = .794

Wow. Already 0/2 on FJs. Today's was pretty hard though - I answered the same thing as Jeff.

Did anybody else see the John Forbes Kerry question coming up right after the Kennedy one? I thought it was pretty obvious what the $1200 answer would be.

Some poor wagering in FJ by Vicky - had she gotten the question right, she still would have finished behind Amanda had Amanda doubled up.

I guess my other thread is answered, at least for this year.

Pssh, I only ever get like 1/5 FJs every week. But I'm dumb, so you should all feel smart next to me. :P My dad guessed Tiny Tim for FJ too; I didn't guess at all.

Yeah, I guessed that Kerry was coming right up after Kennedy too. It became a little obvious when they specified that JFK was Kennedy.

My first thought was Captain Ahab. No dummy, Melville was an American. I then thought of Tiny Tim, but I knew the year was too late. I briefly considered the gruesome twosome of Frankenstiein and Dracula that the writers like to use every so often. With time running out I tried to work backwards and think of popular British writers that might have been used. The Brontes and Austen were strikeouts and time was up. It's very rare I can't get anything down on paper, but tonight my page was blank.

Between Millionaire today and J! tonight I sure learned one new fact for the day. Prince William attended St. Andrews.

Boo to Alex and the judges. I think Vanderbilt alone should have been acceptable.

Same here. Just couldn't get past Ahab and ended up with nothin'. Why wasn't it a Jane Austen clue, dammit!

(By the way, is anyone else watching "Regency House Party" on PBS?)

Stuck on Ahab here too, even though I knew Melville was one of the American greats.

Oh, boy, I hope that these FJ's are not a repeat of all-or-nothing TOC FJ's. As for Vanderbilt, since there were two that could fit the bill, I thought it was definitely appropriate to ask for first names.

I blanked on Long John Silver too so I'm glad now that I steeled myself to open this thread. I was expecting something about Bridget Jones during the break; then I couldn't get Dickens out of my mind although I also knew the year was too late.

I think it was fair to insist on Cornelius just because it 's pretty well-known who Cooper's mother is.

muppet treasure island

I got LJS, but it was only a guess. I was thinking of Tim Curry in Muppet Treasure Island (1996).

Wink Very Final Jeopardy

Depending on the location of the amputation, Henley also might have been the inspiration for the character of Jake Barnes in "The Sun Also Rises...but nothing else will."

I better increase my dosage of saltpeter.

How is it? Are the servants abused? If so, are you tempted to suggest, "Say in France, they came up with a very entertaining remedy for unbearable aristocrats. Why don't you try it?"

Ahab here, too. Great minds think alike. Knew it was wrong but couldn't come up with anything else.

Not only did I say Ahab, but if I'd thought of LJS, I wouldn't have been sure that he was a British creation.

Arguably, the first-place wager was terrible. As I recall, the scores were:
$11,500
$10,xxx
$5,800

I would have bet $101. No one beats me unless they get FJ right. If I'm right, only one of my opponents can beat me. In any case, I expect that $10,399 will probably be enough for a wild card spot.

I'm really enjoying it, and as far as I can tell, the servants have been treated well. We don't really hear much from them except when they open private letters they've been asked to deliver to another guest in the house, and read them to the cameraman. The young woman who serves as the hostess' assistant didn't get to dine with the other guests, and couldn't buy a new gown for the ball. She was forced to make do with some new trimmings on an old gown. (Boo hoo.)

The host employs a professional hermit, whose job is to live in a shack on the estate grounds, act like a madly romantic poet, and occasionally jump out from behind bushes to scare the ladies.

The ladies' bosoms are pushed up to scary heights, and part of the gentlemen's exercise regimen includes intentional "purging."

Fascinating stuff, really.
