He explains his one night stand with Gabrielle early on to Kim as something that just happened, he was upset and dealing with the loss of Emma.
So, upset at losing Emma, he turns to Gabrielle and has sex with her.
Upset at Kim leaving and the whole baby situation, he kisses and almost sleeps with Gabrielle (the closest woman available).
Upset with Kim for sleeping with Cal and the baby being his (so the popular thought was at the time), Shane kisses and eventually sleeps with Kayla.

Maybe it wasn't so much picking Kayla as a way of getting back at Kim, maybe she was just the closest female whilst he was upset.
Thank godness Alice Horton didn't live closer by (did you all just have an ewww! MOMENT, lol).

Shane seems to use physhical contact, ie sex, as a way of avoiding his issues just the same as he accused Kim of doing.I'm just waiting to read a line in fanfic of an older Andrew commenting on his relationship/feelings about his older half sister Eve . . .
"For god's sake Dad, was the concept of using a condom such a distant thought?"
Will never happen but it brought a smile to my lips.
Then again, the are re-surfacing the road directly outside my front door so it could just be the fumes talking . . .

ITA There was definitely a double standard to how Shane viewed things. He condemned Kim for sleeping with Cal yet he had done the same thing with Gabrielle. Kim was in a vulnerable state thinking Shane had died and turned to Cal who was definitely preying on her ... Shane was despondent over Emma's "death" and turned to Gabrielle for one night of comfort. And both events resulted in pregnancies.

I've also thought some of Shane's cruelty towards Kim when he was with Kayla mirrored his cruelty towards Emma. Now I'm not siding with Emma (she was truly psychotic and her actions toward Kim were inexcusable and escalated in the worst way possible) but early on there were times when I felt Shane cruelly flaunted his affection for Kim to Emma ... much like he did later to Kim with his affection for Kayla. Kim at least showed empathy for Emma early on, acknowledging that Emma had probably been hurt by hers and Shane's relationship. She did this when she was blind and Shane took her to his new house.

It just seemed Shane displayed some inappropriate behavior that seemed to repeat itself. IMO he had a blind spot to holding himself accountable for some of his actions.

Finally, I was glad to see Kim have the wisdom and maturity to move on when she realized her love for Shane and a reconciliation were hopeless. I would have hated to see her become just another sicko woman pining for Shane. She really showed a lot of class stepping aside. Too bad Shane couldn't see this cuz then we could have had the happy ending to their story that we had hoped for.

Great chapter, Curly. [sniff, sniff] Thanks for filling me in about "the conversation" Shane had with Kim after Cal kidnapped Kayla. I wasn't watching then and completely missed this horrific scene. I want to know more about it to fill in the gaps, but then again, I don't want to know, ya know?

I definitely agree about the MPD storyline. It was just way too much. There's enough to go through surviving abuse w/o all that and it just didn't fit Kim's character. I think the core of things is Kim's survival of the abuse and trying to put it behind her, only to have it dredged up again and again -- and lastly by Shane of all people!
I have to say one thing, though: I'm not so sure Shane had this picture perfect upbringing, despite what he always said. I mean, look at Drew. There has to be something there. I always thought it was way too Cain and Abel...

I like to think of Kim as a survivor, too. As I said in my earlier post, I prefer the Kim who took her children to L.A. for a fresh start; she seemed so wise, strong and determined at the end of that storyline. Then they have her come back for that silly MPD s/l, once again scared, needy and vulnerable.

I agree. It took a lot of strength and courage to walk away.Shane should have ran after her in LA. Showing her, she was truely the only one for him and as you said..have the happy ending we want/hope and deserve.

Oh, that is a good scene!! Poor Kim . However, there needed to be ALOT more scenes like this to address Kim's feelings about parents who failed to protect her from abuse. I think it's striking that even when Shawn wants to apologize, she won't let him....she continues to blame herself and try to protect him from the embarrassment that she thinks he feels about her prostitution. In this moment, it's clear that she places more value/importance on his feelings than her own and that's sad. Such a low self esteem our girl had . I also think this is a HUGE moment for Kim that was addressed too briefly and too lightly....this is the moment when she knows that he knows that she is not his "best and brightest" (despite his reassurances to the contrary). This is HUGE.....for the first time, she experiences her father really "knowing" her and I think there is alot of anxiety and insecurity that goes along with this moment....will he still love me? will his opinion of me change? will he think I'm "bad"? will he be embarrassed by me? Unfortunately, none of ths was explored and it is completely glossed over. It's a shame a better writer wasn't at the helm by this point.

It certainly shows a lack of depth in the writing when a good storyline uses the secondary characters in even less of a secondary role when they could be playing an even more important role. I can't even imagine how much richer the storyline would have been if they had explored these issues even further with Shawn, Kimberly AND Shane....allowing them all to work through to a resolution that left everyone feeling good rather than empty! This type of writing "garbage" happened WAY too much after 1986.

I have to agree about the writing. There was so much more they could have done with this...but I do so love how the actors pulled something out of it anyway. As usual, Patsy anchored the scene with her performance and everyone played off her...but Charlie did a good job of looking like he was about to deck Shawn for not responding to Kim's pleas, Peggy looked sufficiently guilt-ridden when Shawn said Victor is an evil man, Frank delivered that last line: "you're my little girl, my best and my brightest" in such a loving manner that you believed he didn't blame her, that, despite everything, she truly was his B&B -- even if she had trouble believing it... That's what I love about the scene.
