I've been reading several posts on this message board and I've noticed that there are several Star Wars fans as well as Spider-man fans that are posting on this message board. I have a quick question that I think would make a good debate. With both Spider-man and Star Wars: Episode 2 coming out next summer, how do you think the two films will venture against each other. I personally think that Star Wars will probably come out on top just because it has a stronger fan base and an already establised reputation as a film line. Although, I do think that if both movies were released on the same day, which I think they might actually be(please correct me if I am wrong), it would be the biggest grossing box office weekend ever. What do the rest of you think?

If Spider-Man and Star Wars(I'm a fan of Star Wars too) come out on the same day, I'm going to see Spidey first. Hopefully here they won't have a matinee, otherwise I'd have to skip school to see the first showing of the first day of Spider-Man, maybe go to the next showing of Star Wars afterward. heh

I have a bet witha good friend of mine. $100 to the person who bet on the highest grossing film of the two. I am a fan of Star Wars, but Spidey has my vote on this. This film is long overdue and there are lots of us Spidey fans out here!

Considering what happened with the last Prequel, and considering that not only has there never been a true Spider-man movie also it also should be appealing to the same groups, families and so on... Spidey should probably come out on top. However that does not mean that SW will bomb of course. My own guestimate would be between 200-400 domestic for both. If I should be more accurate, I would guess say: 383 for Spidey 330 for SW. A healthy sum but not "Block Buster" status I think.

Given the performance of Episode 1...not a flop, but not the blockbuster they expected either, not to mention the disappointment I've heard from those that did see Episode 1...I'm willing to bet Spiderman does much better. I hope Spiderman does well enough to ensure a string of sequals.:)

My question, though....

Do you think the Spiderman movie will do better than X-men did last year?

I would have to give the nod in a Star Wars - Spiderman head's up battle to Spiderman. The fan base may be larger for Star Wars but we need to remember that there have already been 4 Star Wars movies. For me, that automatically makes Spiderman more attractive.

I'm the type person who likes to catch a movie during the matinee time. Less money, less people. However, I plan on seeing Spider-man with a full house of fans on opening day (May 3, 2002). There's nothing that could keep me from being there when the movie spins for the first time.

I'll definitely go to see Episode ll, because I've loved all the Star Wars movies since seeing the first one as a kid in 1977 (standing in line for six hours more than once, man those were the old days). The only difference is, I'll catch Episode ll during the matinee a couple of weeks after it opens......major difference!!

Definitely spiderman, he's on American icon and is instantly recognized around the world. Not too many people were happy with Episode 1, plus it's a movie everyone's been waiting for years to come to the big screen. Although Episode 2 will make money, it will be interesting to see how many people will see Spiderman over and over again. I don't think they're going to put the two movies together on the same weekend, Sony wants Spiderman to make money without competition.

i'm personally unsure which of the films will top the other. i happen to be a relatively large fan of both spider-man and star wars... but i'm still torn on the topic. if they do indeed get released on the same day/weekend i believe it will be a relatively close call, mainly for two reasons. one, the last star wars movie was a big disappointment for many viewers, so those people may go see spider-man instead, or sit through episode 2 hoping it's better than episode 1. the other is that many people will go to see spider-man due to the fact that this is his first true film. both factors will lead to vast amounts of people seeing either film, and probably just as many seeing both. all in all, just 'cause i didn't approve of episode 1, i hope spider-man whoops jar jar's lil *****.

I love Star Wars, but I'm afraid that the way the last movie was, a lot of people was pretty disappointed. (JA JA).
Spidey is a movie that is way overdue by any standards, and I do believe that there will be lines forming at the theaters for this one, If the film is any where near the way the movie going to be like, I myself will be inline for this one.
Great cast hopeful a great story and with the fan base that spidey has, I believe this will go over real big, I might go as far as saying that it will be No. 1 for the whole month of May 2002, and will take in more than X-men, and will do better that Batman or Superman did when they were 1st release.

Some people were disappointed with Ep 1 but not everyone. 460 mill means more than just fanboys saw it. After all it is the second highest grossing film in North America of all time. And I still loved it. And Spidey can be disappointing too. We dont know if its gonna be great or not just yet. Spidey will do good, maybe make a good 250 mill. But Ep 2 will be the biggest of the year. Has there ever been a year when a new Star Wars film came out that it has'nt been number one? Nope. Ep 2 will be the biggest. If there is one guarentee in hollywood its that a Star Wars film will make a ton of money and win the year. Spidey will make enough for a sequel and thats all that matters. Ep 2 will be number one and Spidey will come in second.

What can I say. I am a fan of both. However, I don't think you could seriously compare these two. For one, Spider-Man isn't in theaters and two Star Wars is a Saga. Star Wars as individual movies aren't that great but when you look at them as a whole they are great. And Spider-Man is great as well, as a Comic. I think both movies will do great. Enought Said.

I have been doing some more research on the release date of Episode 2 and all I have found is a tentative date from an unconfirmed source that it will be released on 05/22/2002. Let me know if anyone finds anything to the contrary.

By the way, great points of view on this subject.

Episode 2 will be released on the Wednesday before Labor Day. If you look at all previous Star Wars movies that is when they have all entered theaters. So, that is why I and many other big movies buffs expect the release of Star Wars.

All I know is that it will be a big battle at the Box Office between Episdoe 2 and Spider-Man. However, I will go see both because I have been waiting for both for a long time. But as of now I am looking more forward to Spider-Man since more pormotional material has been released and I want to keep Episode 2 in the dark for me so I can be surprised instead of knowing the entire plot.

On the subject of Spiderman VS Star Wars, It'll be really close, but I have to agree with the masses that Spiderman will prevail as a better movie, Episode I did well but the acting was bland even with the A list actors in the film. Spiderman, however seems that it was just written better and the producers are more focused on the writing and not the effects, and that's rare with such a big budget movie.

I would have to agree with AXL. Spiderman is going to be a gigantic hit because there are so many people waiting for it to come out like "US". But there will never be a movie that will ever be as big as any Stars Wars film that comes out the same year let alone the same month.

I have only one comment I will say that might give at least some clue for many ppl.

I _WILL_ make sure that I see the Spidey movie at least 8 times to make it the number 1 film I have seen in the theatres _EVEN_ if this movie supposedly 'could suck' because I am a completely insane spidey fan.... So there :P

As for SW... I WILL see it, maybe more than once if it is good... but I stillllll have a bad taste in my mouth after jar jar and hear he is in this one too!!! UGH

Hey billc, don't worry Jar Jar gets limited screen time in this one. He is only a Senator so he will only be in the Courisant scenes. Much less screen time in Episode 2.

I'm going with spiderman on this one. A Spiderman movie is way, way, way pass due. You do not know how long i wanted them to make a spiderman movie and now one's coming out. I love star wars too but that already had four movies This is the first real spiderman motion picture. I'm so happy, i never thought i'd live to see the day (even though i'm only 15). I could almost cry.

Hate to burst some competetive bubbles, but Spiderman won't really be competing against EP2. I think the studios had a unwritten agreement to keep away from each other long enough! Spiderman ---> May 3, Ep2 ---> May 19th, they are well enough apart that I will go see Spiderman about 5 to 6 times before Ep2 comes out! Then i'll probably see that 5-6 times. Goerge Lucas already said this one is going to be the bomb, so I'm not worried about Ep2 sucking!!! Overall, I think Star Wars will edge Spidey worldwide, but not by much, and they will both make well ovr $400 million! I'm just trying to support as much SCI-FI and Fantasy, so Hollywood can realize that it's big money is properly producing them...NO MORE Superrnova's and Red Planet's!!! Yuck!

there is no doubt that Star Wars: Episode 2 will reign throughout the summer. Just too big of a fan base, and hype...besides Boba Fett is in this one I believe!

Spider-Man will do well (hell I plan on seeing both films..probably a few times with each), and has a big fan base too but Star Wars fans are crazy...only movie i've ever heard where people were cheering in the audience and clapping when the Star Wars theme song came on.

Let's just put it this way...next summer is soooo much MY summer at the theatres. 2002 will ROCK.

I know the two movies are not really compeating, and I am a big spidy fan myself, but I feel I have to raise a point about Star Wars Ep 1...

I have heard many bad reviews of that movie, and all I have to say is that Star Wars is like a play...The first trilogy had (as the word trilogy would bring to mind) 3 acts, the Characters were introduced in SW, the drama was built to a head in Empire, and the resolution came in Jedi...I think that is EXACTLY where the new movies are going...The next one will more than likly be much better than the first one, but will rely on the first movie to set the mood...

Anyway enough about that...I think if they came out on the same day, it would be a very tight race...I for one know that I would see them both in the same day without question...Camping out at 4am the morning the SW tickets go on sale, I'd go ahead and pick up my Spidy tickets while I was there...Nuff said...

Considering Episode one was considered a sub-par movie and still made 460 million. It's not bad. Remember that ticket prices will most likely be raised by theaters knowing that this year is the best year for movies in nearly a decade. But Spiderman won't prevent Star wars for making more money. Remember that The Mummy came out two weeks before and made 44 million in it's first weekend. Spiderman will make that by saturday night. My predictions:

LOTR Fellowship = 300 million
Spiderman = 350 million
Star Wars 2 = 550 million
The Matrix Reloaded = 400 million
X-Men 2 = 200 million
Blade 2 = 75 million
Two Towers = 250 million

As you can see I'm being bullish.

If you're talking about fan bases, Spiderman has 40 years while Star Wars has what 20+ years? Star Wars will rock and there is no doubt that it will because of die hard fans but what you fail to realize is that Spiderman will also rock and rock even harder. First of all, its not that geeky so it might pertain to a wider audience. Second the audience consists of your parents as well. They remember Spiderman probably just as much as they remember Star Wars. So the fan base for Spiderman should just be just as big as Star Wars's fan base if not more. Another point is Star Wars doesn't talk about us and our fantasies really. It talks about some fantasy in another galaxy. Spiderman however is more down to earth. It takes place on earth in our current time setting. And there aren't that many hypotheticals in the universe it is set in. No one will really question Spiderman like the mutations in X-Men which in my opinion is really far fetched nor will anyone really question Spiderman like the midichlorians in Star Wars. Simply Spiderman will only be enjoyed for its story. Its ppl like those super obsessive Star Wars and Matrix fans that mess it up for others.

of the Rings... Another HUGE topic found on another HUGE website. Episode II will be an entirely different beast than EP I. Many will remember the odd, "What's going on" feeling when Empire opened up and we were all suddenly dropped in antarctica... Predict all you want, but the one thing that will decide the winner of this battle will be the quality of the films. Not the fan base. These two movies have fan bases that reach back decades. Spidey goes a little further than SW, but all in all, they are equally treasured by millions and millions alike. I love the threads on this site and the thoughtful comments by such a wide variety of fans! How many Movies bring this kind of fanaticism out of the woodwork a YEAR AHEAD OF RELEASE? Episode I comes to mind, maybe X-men, but I was following it (and it is the BEST comic adaptation to date I might add) and there just weren't this many people interrested.
What a tangled web we weave in our (not so little) fantasy worlds!

In the debate between Star Wars Episode II and Spider-Man being the bigger money maker? I am a hugefan of both Star Wars and Spider-Man, but I think the force wins here. There are way more Star Wars fans than Spidey fans (or at least I'm guessing here). Ans Star Wars, as a film, is more established that Spider-Man as a film. But Spider-Man WILL put up a tough fight for Anakin and the gang due to the view some of the non-Star Wars fans have gotten from Episode I. But bottom line, Star Wars will be THE movie of the summer next year with Spider-Man most likely coming in at 2nd.

I'm waiting 20+ years for Sw Ep2 .... though I don't have any SW tattoos, I do have a Spidey. But Spidey was and is a comic icon.... he'll ALWAYS be better in comics, unlike Star Wars which originated on film. Sorry folks....SW got my vote.

As stated earlier Spiderman brings a certain appeal because it's the first time coming 2 da' screen and most comic fans are anxious 2 check out how it's interpreted 2 da' big screen.STAR WARS EP2 has fans drooling also...especially 2 see an older Anakin,Obi Wan..the Birth of the Empire?Clone Wars?Anakin's seduction 2 da' Dark side?etc.
So da' anticipation of both movies is VERY high!
I know I'll check out both of them......probably TWICE.

Spider Man may beat Episode II. Most people hated Episode 1 because of jar jar binks and i heard jar jar will be in episode 2. Spider Man, however, is liked by many people and does not have a prequel that will screw it up. But Episode 2 does look like it will be an improvment from episode 1
