I have some bad news. It seems that The Spectacular Spider-Man is replacing The Batman on Kids' WB. Basically. A representative for Warner Bros. Animation has confirmed that the current season of The Batman is the last season of the popular series. The series finale, called "Lost Heroes," is slated to air as a one-hour special on Saturday March 8th, 2008.

Well I haven't been following The Batman. I wish they didn't start the JL stuff though. I wish it was only Batman, Batgirl and Robin. Hopefully the JL stuff is over. Though I just hope TSM is as good or better than The Batman. When The Batman didn't have the JL stuff. But I believe it will be great.

Yey! I didn't really like The Batman. When I saw Mark Hamill as Tony Zucco and Kevin Conroy as Mr. Grayson...I thought of old times. Old animated Joker & Batman will always kick rump!! Besides, I've seen what they've done with the Vulture in this new Spidey series. I expect nothing but greatness.

Newsarama interviews Crispin Freeman the voice of Electro in the new toon. http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=148431

Just read this quote from the interview, I love what they have done with Electro!

What I think what’s different about this Electro is his power is effecting his mind. He’s almost completely insane, babbling a lot of the time. The high voltage has overpowered his psyche. I find that really interesting. I mean, of course your brain is responsible for channeling a lot of electronic signals through its neural passages. When you’re charged with all that electricity its probably going to effect your brain. That’s certainly what he struggles with. It’s almost like he’s still trying to figure out what’s happening to him. He switches from being angry to paranoid to being vicious to sort of cool. It’s really interesting playing him.

it.is.devoted.to.kids.Actually it's not. If you've been watching the videos, reading interviews and all, it's not. It's for any age for poeple to enjoy. The show is for kids who are just starting to like Spider-Man, which means they'll want to learn more about the character. Meaning when they can come onto the internet or something, they can look them up and see what they really looked like in the comics, cartoons, and games. Which I think is grand. :) They've said countless times it based off of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's time on the comic. Which is a lot of comics and time. They've taken things from the comic, change a few things, even taken things from the movie! Which I'm pleased to look for those moments that are like the movie. With all this, the person that has loved Spider-Man's world and has seen everything for quite a while, will see those little things from the comics from the plus 40 years, the past three movies everything. A little kid that has even liked Spider-Man for a while, wouldn't know that much. But that depends on their age. I started watching Spider-Man on Fox Kids when I was 4 or 5 and so on until now, I've loved Spidey and his characters. Most of the at least. But it's been almost 20 years since the last real cartoon, and they're trying to give a fresh take on it as well as keeping true to things and doing things right. Unlike previous cartoons. Not even the 60s' cartoon had things from the comic! It was made when the comic has been going on for 5 or so years. I didn't see anything from that comic. But for this series they've said they have, and I believe them.

I'm going to watch every episode. Hopefully I can catch them. Since they change the bloody time when it change to the CW a few years ago. But hey, I have You Tube. :D I can watch the episodes hopefully on there.

the children are the target public. that's why their style and drawings of the characters are like that.

It usually would be. The Batman each season had around 12 episodes or so. TSSM has either 24 or up to 30 episodes for the first season. It's basically like two seasons in one. That way you don't have to wait a year. Also why so interested, Alien? I thought you weren't going to watch any shows except one or two. Unless you want to see the horrible drawn Venom (to you for now) in an episode to see what he looks and sounds like on the show? Hmm.

DAVE BULLOCK TALKS SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, NEW FRONTIER

SAN FRANCISCO -- Dave Bullock, director of the recently released Justice League: The New Frontier, told The Continuum he has directed four episodes of Kids' WB!'s The Spectacular Spider-Man.

"The first one I directed was the Lizard episode," Bullock said. "I specifically asked for that, knowing it would absolutely be a much moodier, darker type story. Curt Connors is such a great character, so I pushed for that."

The episode, "Natural Selection," will be the series' third.

Bullock directed one episode in each of the first season's four arcs.

Bullock was a storyboard artist on previous DC animated series -- Justice League, Batman Beyond, Superman and Batman -- and was happy to direct on Justice League: The New Frontier, based on Darwyn Cooke's comic series.

"To get a chance to direct the key players in the DC Universe was a dream come true," he said. "There's such fantastic properties to work with. Darwyn's take, especially, I was much more in line with, retro early Silver Age versions of the heroes.

"It really seems to suit me as a person. My perspective on them is they're just good-hearted, good-natured people trying to find their way in the world. And it doesn't always line up with the latest incarnations being published. I feel the Silver Age is the purest versions of the characters."

Bullock has also directed three episodes of the upcoming Star Wars: Clone Wars, as well as helping out on other episodes.

"I did that before working on New Frontier," he said. "It kind of shows you the difference time-wise between 2D animation and CG. Some of the stuff with Lucas has been in the can for quite a while. It's just that they wanted to build up a volume so they wouldn't have to go into reruns."

So they're going to do it sort of like Spider-Man TAS from the 90's did instead of like the comics? Remember when they had Moriah and her "nickname" was Calypso?
I'd rather see the real Calypso though. She's alot scarier than just some feral woman with superstrength. Voodoo can give you nightmares!

Okay, guys. The news for today.

An interview with Victor Cook from www.comicscontinuum.com

THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN'S VICTOR COOK
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Continuum continues its series of interviews with the talent behind The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series today with producer/supervising director Victor Cook.

The Continuum sat down with Cook backstage at WonderCon for a short interview. Following is an edited transcription.

The Continuum: You're working on the second set of episodes now. How does the second set feel compared to the first? Do you feel more like you have your footing now?

Cook: We had our footing really from the beginning of the first season, knowing how we wanted to approach the show. The Comic-Con trailer that we did was really the great testing ground for some of the action things we wanted to do, giving it a little bit more of a Hong Kong flair and a little bit more fun choreographed action as opposed to straight-forward punches and stuff.

What the challenge for the second set is that we are simultaneously doing post-production on the first set. So that's the huge challenge -- it's like we have two full-time jobs going on at the same time. It literally started at the same time. Episode 1 came back basically the same week started storyboards on Episode 14.

The Continuum: Often with these the shows, the second seasons are better because people are more familiar with the property and the routine. Do you feel you hit the ground running?

Cook: I think we hit the ground running with this. That's not to say these aren't going to get better. They're going to get better because we're going to be better at what we're doing. But in terms of the things we wanted to do with character development, designs and how we're staging and storyboarding the action, this stuff was very thought out for months before we attempted our first episode.

But it's going to get better. Each one is better. Even in the first season.

The Continuum: Spider-Man has a lot attention brought to it. It would appear a hard thing to get started. Was it arduous?

Cook: It was, to get everybody on the same page. We're dealing with Sony, who's producing, and Kids' WB! and also Marvel. While there are a lot of similar concerns and goals, there are sometimes different expectations. Kids' WB! wants this to be appealing for kids, Marvel wants this to stay true to the classics and we're trying to do a show for everyone.

From a writing standpoint, Greg Weisman and Sony made the right decision in terms of, we're going to start where (Stan) Lee and (Steve) Ditko started. We're just going to contemporize it. We're just going right to the beginning. And that was the appeal for me coming out. He's a teenager, he's in high school, just like the original comic.

In terms of the visual development, because this had to appeal to kids and to fans, we wanted a design style that was going to give us that ability for animation. If you remember the old, original animated Spider-Man, there was no webs on his costumes. Then you go to the 90s one, where there were webs and muscles everywhere. We knew, because of the movies, that the bar had been raised on how Spider-Man was expected to be seen moving. And, for me, knowing that and having been an animator in the past, the challenge was how do we take the detail down to its most simplest, while still retaining the classic look of the character.

The (Ralph) Bakshi cartoon was a classic, but it still bothered me that he didn't have webs on his body. I think we achieved that. We simplified. He's got webs, but it's distilled to its very essentials. And, as seen on the Comic-Con trailer, it moves great. He's jumping and flipping.

The Continuum: And you have to deal with the cityscapes, too.

Cook: We knew were not going to do a "CG" Spider-Man this time around. But part of Spider-Man's movements isn't just about Spider-Man. It's also the backgrounds, moving dimensionally. We just took the same approach to the backgrounds we did to the characters, just distill it down to the essential details to have architectural detail and real perspective, and have it feel like New York. You'll have buildings in the backgrounds, but there won't even be windows on it, because you don't need them in the far backgrounds.

The Continuum: Can you talk about the look of the villains?

Cook: With the villains, on top of that animation design idea of simplification and having strong silhouettes, we wanted to contemporize the look of each villain, while keeping the iconic look.

The Continuum: Would it be safe to say you changed them a little more?

Cook: If anyone has seen the commercials or the clips of Electro, he is obviously very much changed from the comic book. He doesn't have the stafish mask or anything like that. But, at the same time, you take another look, that electrical head of his is reminscent of that mask. His costume is still green.

I'm not sure if it was by design or by accident, but in the 1960s the majority of Spider-Man's villains had green them it. I don't know if that was because of the comic-book printing process or the limited colors that they had. But Electro, Lizard, Sandman, the Vulture...

And for me, being the filmmaker guy in the series, I said, "You know what? I'm going to make that a choice for the show -- green is the color of evil or oppression." When you go to the high school, for instance, in his biology class, the color is kind of yellow. It's friendly. It's where Peter Parker is most comfortable. When you get out in the hallways, the corridors, it's kind of green. And that's where the social interaction is happening, and there's Flash Thompson and King Kong. The jocks wear green lettermen jackets. It's a little thing, but maybe the average person won't pick up on it, but for me that's a film choice.

The Continuum: With the Green Goblin, were you most influenced by the classic, Ultimate or movie?

Cook: I'd say he's a contemporized version of the classic.

The Continuum: And Sandman?

Cook: A contemporized version of the ciassic. You know, you meet almost every villain in the first episode. You're going to see them. You see Doctor Octavius, Flint Marko, Alex O'Hirn. Marko and Alex O'Hirn are two-bit hoods. And you see the motivations for what their goals are once they have their powers.

The Continuum: Are you having fun?

Cook: It's been a blast. The Romita-era Spider-Man is what I grew up on, and the old Bakshi Spider-Man. When I was brought on, the opportunity to create a new classic animated Spider-Man for a new generation was the big appeal for me. The whole new theme song, the whole vibe of our show is not dark and brooding. The weight of the world is not on his shoulder. I think it's true to Lee-Ditko era, we just contemporized it, not just in the look and the stories, but in the music. We have a great theme song that has a nice retro touch to the 60's Spider-Man. It's a different song, but we wanted it for that reason. The score within the show is very contemporary, and orchestral in the dramatic and action beats. And in the high school beats, it's almost like a high school movie.

Visually, we wanted to bring in some iconic touches from the comic books, some retro touches. Tune in for the little last shot of the episodes. They've very reminiscent of some of the very last panels of the comic books.

The Continuum: You really had a lot to draw upon.

Cook: We really did have a lot to draw upon. For me, with on the visual style, it was like what if 1962 was today and but also but if in 1962 we were making a TV show today. The wipes and transitions to each scene kind of have a retro touch, the last scene you see dissolves the sky into Spider-Man's eyes and mask over the city, just like in the comic books.

In the first episode, you see Harry talking to Peter and he says, "What did you do over the summer?" And you see the half-mask dissolve really quickly and off -- just like in the comic book.

Those were retro, 1960s touches that we're bringing in to today. It just gives a fun feeling, and it really fits into the style of the show. With action shows, there's a range from like Samurai Jack to X-Men: Evolution or Ultimate Avengers, where they're more real. I'd say that Teen Titans, it wasn't all the way over to the real and they could get away with those anime, graphic things. We're not doing that, but, because our design style is all the way to the far right, the half-Spidey mask and the sky turning, it doesn't feel like, "Where does that come from?"

Interview with Robert Englund from www.marvelousnews.com

Robert Englund expands his legacy of creating engaging, iconic characters within the fanboy realm as the voice of Vulture, Spider-Man’s initial super foe in the premiere episode of “The Spectacular Spider-Man.”

An all-new animated television series, “The Spectacular Spider-Man” debuts Saturday, March 8 with back-to-back episodes airing at 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. (ET/PT) on Kids’ WB! on The CW.

In the premiere episode, "Survival of the Fittest,” summer is over for Peter Parker and school's ready to start -- both literally (it's his junior year of high school), and in the real world of crime-fighting -- as Spider-Man faces his first real challenge (The Enforcers) and his first real super-villain (Vulture). Victor Cook directed the script, which was written by Greg Weisman. Based on Marvel Entertainment’s popular super hero, “The Spectacular Spider-Man” is produced by Culver Entertainment, a Sony Pictures Television Company.

Englund said the voice for Vulture came organically from looking at the early designs of the character prior to the cast’s first recording session.

“They gave us test drawings when we first came to record, and I used that for my inspiration, my basis for the choice of Vulture’s voice,” Englund said. “I sort of screech – he is a large bird, after all. Mostly I’ve been doing a lot of screaming as Vulture because, as fans know, he flies – and most of the time I’m chasing Spider-Man across the sky.”

After establishing the baseline voice of his character, Englund has worked with “The Spectacular Spider-Man” voice director Jamie Thomason and producer Greg Weisman to further craft Vulture’s personality and particular vocal inflections.

“So far I’ve been conversational, and we’ve spent some time finding Vulture’s sense of humor,” Englund said. “He’s older and a little frustrated, because he feels he’s just as good as the other villains. He actually has a bit of pomposity about him -- so he can be a smart-*** at times with a one-liner here and there. It’s really coming out more as the season progresses – I’ve only just begun to explore that. I think ultimately I’d like to put in a little bit of Clifton Webb -- there’s a bit of his kind of wit.”

Unlike many animated television series today, “The Spectacular Spider-Man” records most episodes in a single day with massive ensemble sessions – often times split into a morning and afternoon segment. The result is a room of 10-14 actors recording together, a scenario that Englund finds especially appealing.

“Jamie is a great voice director – he’s very funny, and he keeps it all nice and loose, which is important because there’s usually a lot of us around,” Englund said. “This is a huge cast – for every episode – and that makes it more fun for everyone. We all get to participate and work off each other. It’s wonderful to finally work with some of these actors – like Peter MacNicol. I’ve been a fan of his since he did ‘Dragonslayer.’ Peter really gets into it.”

Aside from the usual joys of voice acting (“You can show up in your pajamas,” “You do it until you get it right”), Englund finds the nuances of the medium to be both entertaining and educational.

“What’s interesting to me is that voiceover acting and direction has its own different vocabulary that I’m still learning,” Englund said. “It’s kind of like little short cuts of jargon that the director uses to communicate with the actors. It’s pop culture short-hand to cue us to a certain sound or attitude. It’s a learning process, but I like to learn. And it’s fun.”

The show exceeded all my expectations. You can tell it was made by spider-man fanboys, they got everything right.
And did anyone else enjoy the fact that it wasn't as kiddy as we expected it to be?

yea i noticed it was............aimed towrds young teens (13, 14)
i mean they dind't cuss or anything but it was enjoyable and i could relate to Peter well :D

Well of course they weren't gonna cuss, no one expected that.
But you have to appreciate that they made it accessible to almost every demographic. There were definitely kiddy parts, but I would in no way consider it a kiddy show.

Just little snippets of semi-corny dialogue, and I felt the characterization for the electro character was a little watered down.
But that is literally the only thing not fantastic about this show.

Could you PM me the second episode of how it was. That way I can remember what happened in the right order and post it in it's thread. :)

I didn't know you could make DVD from TiVo.

You're welcome. But I can't enter it because I'm too old by three years. Doesn't matter. I like free things, but it's not worth getting into trouble. But I'm not old I'm young.

Yea, I had that problem too when I entered another contest, but then I just decided to use my little brothers birthday and stuff. Now I can enter contests like these... lol pathetic...

You really cant, but the cable box is connected to the TV, which has some sort of DVD burner on it, it records what comes on the screen I guess.

It might take a while to do, my madre is the only one that knows how to use it, its her tv, so yea...

Well this show was definitely worth the hype. Classic Spider-man at its best.

The only complaint I can think of is the new Liz Allen. I get that they want to have diversity on the show, but I don't think they have to change the well-known characters. For example, they could have easily switched Liz and Sally. Plus the way they wrote Liz in general I thought was pretty annoying. I'm kind of hoping she doesn't last long as a love interest.

Haha... Latino Liz was so funny... it was a real contrast!

Also, it looks like Midtown is like some college, or hotel... Thats like the only thing that bugged me.

The voice actor for Rhino for Spider-Man 2 the game, is voicing Sandman oddly enough. As well as Hammerhead, I think.

Technically, Liz Allen WAS Peter Parker's love interest in high school. It's just that it was unrequited love. She always brushed him off to hang out with people like Flash Thompson who was a bully and a jerk in his high school days.

As for Sally Avril, if you didn't know, she tried to become a superhero and paid the ultimate price. She was supposed to be the only female that liked Peter when he was just a geek in high school.

What some of you don't realize is that Peter never met MJ, Gwen, or Harry until he got to his first year of college in the comics.

It's not that I don't like Liz Allen, I just don't like this Liz Allen. I know Liz always brushed Peter off, but the way they wrote this Liz just got on my nerves. Especially how she kept calling him "Petey." It's been awhile since I've read the Lee/Ditko comics, but I can only remember Gwen calling Peter Petey. It just sounded really odd to me how she would insult while using a pet name like Petey.

What some of you don't realize is that Peter never met MJ, Gwen, or Harry until he got to his first year of college in the comics.I realize that, but there was Betty. I have a feeling I'm going to prefer Betty over Liz.
