We have had a very fruitful first season of the Spectacular Spider-Man. Not only did excellent voice actors affliated with Spidey like Josh Keaton and James Taylor assist, but new additions like Vanessa Marshall, Lacey Chabert, Ben Diskin, and John DiMaggio helped create colorful characters that will leave their mark on Marvel animation for the rest of this decade.
In the first season, Spidey tackles a stream of foes such as Vulture, the Enforcers, Electro, the Lizard, Shocker, Sandman, and Rhino. But as he grew stronger, two of his friends, Harry Osborn and Eddie Brock, leaned toward evil, and eventually became evil foes as the Green Goblin, and a very menacing foe.
To finish up the first season, Doc Ock, Chameleon, and his cohorts joined the fray as Tombstone worked harder to destroy Spidey, as Green Goblin was defeated and sent to Europe for therapy. But the main highlight of the final arc was the Symbiote Orgins, as it explored Spidey exploiting from its powers, fighting his demons, and recalling the famous story that made him the hero he is now.
And finally, we had an epic showdown with Venom, aka Eddie Brock, who has now lost all compassion and kindness, and become a sadistic powerhouse that proved himself Spidey's second greatest enemy. Also included was the confession of Gwen's passionate love for Peter, and the disposal of the Gene Cleanser, thereby erasing possibilities of the horrific Man-Spider Event that traumatized me for life.
Now here is the remaining question. What will happen next? Will we learn more about the secrets of the Goblin, and of the Osborns? Will Tombstone crack down harder than ever to ensure Spidey's destruction? And last, but certainly not least...how will Peter handle his ever-changing life in the distant, yet upcoming Season 2?
Here, I have decided to post my favorite parts of this season. From here, you are free to add your own lifes and dislikes about this season.
Villains: What would a Spidey eppy be without a villainous crook waiting to give our webhead a challenge? Favorites like GG, Doc Ock, and of course Venom made me anticipated to see them on screen and show their dark hearts. Some of the origins such as Electro's, seemed a little too improvised, rather than pertaining to their original stories. Overall, I rate the villains and their story layout 9/10.
Humor: While there weren't many side-splitting comments made throughout here, there were some funny quips and reactions to a character's status, such as the infamous Peter Stench Gag in "Market Forces". Flash Thompson was also a good source of humor, as his constant attacks on Peter often backfired and got him in trouble. Also, the MasterCard reference in "Reaction" gave me a tiny giggle. I rate the humor 7/10.
Character Development: This show had the exact amount of development there should be. In both social enemies-turned-friends, and friends-turned-enemies, there was drastic change which wasn't rushed, and it allowed a lot of time for us to get adapted to the new characters by the season's end. I rate Development 10/10.
Deepness: With our heroic yet humble hero in a sympathetic light, we learned to feel sorry for his constant stream of stress which he always fought through. The story of Uncle Ben is a great example of what I mean, and that made Pete's triumph over the symbiote in "Intervention" so great. I give Deepness 9/10.
VA: Fantastic voices. Not only did the main cast rock, but traditional VA's like Jeff Bennett, Jim Cummings, and John DiMaggio rocked to high heaven for their roles. For making their characters real, I give them 10/10
Overall, 45/50. Not a bad score. The only complaint I have is for some of the character designs. While Sean Galloway did an excellent job drawing Vulture, Doc Ock, and Venom, characters like Eddie Brock, Randy Robertson, and Chameleon seemed a little too childishly designed. Though the voice acting easily made up for it.
This is my view of the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. Here's to a great second season in September! :spidey_cheers:
