If there is another place where this post should've been placed (like an older thread), I'm sorry for wasting a new thread. Whatever the case, it's not like we can run out of them. Anyway, I'm thinking that we've seen enough of Peter Parker's college life. Proposed resolution: Give us "Mr.Parker", Science Teacher at Midtown high.
There were things in the first movie that were magic, things that didn't require a lot of visual effects but gave you goose bumps or small tingles anyway. Things like Peter catching MJ's food on the lunch tray in the cafeteria as she slipped on apple juice (whatever it was), or the first time Peter's Spider sense went off (okay, so that required some FX). Or the time when Peter clung to the ceiling to hide from his aunt May and Norman during their Thanksgiving dinner. Comments were made about the 3rd film that the Spider-man series has aged, that though the effects are still there, nothing new had been brought to the table that would wow the audience. I think the vast majority of us would kindly disagree.
If Parker became a Science teacher it'd give a new direction to the movies. Some of the best stories from the earlier part of this decade dealt with Peter's involvement in his students lives as both Mr. Parker and Spider-man. It'd be a great way to bring new characters into the story without forcing them in, a lot more variety, and for once I think it'd force the story writers give Peter the confidence he's earned a long time ago, and not in a gawky, superficial way <I know that this request is a bit superficial itself, but could we please give Peter a new haircut, seriously, he's been doing the combover since '02, and he's not even balding.>
It would be nice to see Peter stressing out in ways that are less dull (staring out a window with a frown isn't going to cut it all for all five movies). I think that there are great comedic elements that could be intertwined with this. Peter accidentally breaking something in the bathroom, like something on the sink, or the paper towel dispenser. Maybe Peter is in the classroom, upset about some aspect of one of his students life, he smacks his desk and sends it flying across the room (again, for more of a comedic effect). In one comic Peter used his Spider sense to catch a wadded ball of paper that a student through at his head, without even turning around. These things are simple, people, really. Practical effects that would require no CG at all. I know they don't make a movie great, but they do put zing into it. What else? Oh yes,
it'd be nice to see Peter square off against normal people. Those scenes are usually pretty funny in the comics, as he outclasses petty thugs by so much. I don't know about you, but it'd be pretty awesome to see a band of thugs webbed up so their bodies spell "Loser".
I admit, none of these ideas are original, I wish someone would just call JMS and beg him to help with the story. Conclusion? Peter Parker has a lot of untapped potential, the movie magic has yet to begin. Filming 4 and 5 back to back has me worried, but there's still hope. Thanks for reading.
