EXCLUSIVE: Sam Raimi Talks ‘Spider-Man 4’ Villain Possibilities — But Will He Go Obscure?

http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/05/28/exclusive-sam-raimi-talks-spider-man-4-villain-possibilities-but-will-he-go-obscure/

It’s a question on the minds of film buffs and comics fans alike, as they look forward to 2011’s return of Peter Parker to the big-screen: Who will he be fighting?

Recently, Sam Raimi revealed to us that he’s a mere four weeks away from reading a first draft of the “Spider-Man 4” script. And along with writer David Lindsay-Abaire, there are a few key elements they’re looking for in a potential villain.

“I’ve talked with David about a possible villain, villains, villain-ess,” the director grinned, being careful not to reveal genders or numbers in regards to Spidey’s nemesis. “[We’ve spoken] about who knows what Spider-Man’s conflicting personas would be.”

Some longtime Spidey fans are arguing these days that Raimi should stick to the bigger-name characters and have Peter Parker square off against someone like The Lizard, Venom or Carnage, while others would prefer to see him shine a spotlight on such more-obscure villains as Morbius, the Living Vampire or Sinister Six characters like Vulture or Electro. At this point, Raimi told us he’s open to introducing even the most obscure of supervillains.

“That would be absolutely fine,” explained the filmmaker, whose insanely intense “Drag Me to Hell” lands in theaters later this month. “But I’m not looking [for things] like that.”

“I’m trying to, with the writer, find Peter Parker’s story primarily,” Raimi said of what factors will weigh on his selection of supervillains. “And find the right conflict for him to come up against. So that either he can grow as a human being and overcome this thing, or perish. It’s more about finding the villain that represents the best story for Peter.”

And although Raimi revealed to us that he does know which super-villains Lindsay-Abaire is working into his script, they are still subject to change. “Really, I have to read the screenplay and see if it’s working, what we’ve discussed,” explained the filmmaker. “Before I really, in my heart, could tell you that I knew.”

“Spider-Man 4” is due in theaters May 6, 2011.

Interesting, but hopefully this won't take the focus away from Spider-Man. He seems so Peter centric right now.

I think a good logical step would be Lizard and Kraven. It would have a theme of Redemption. Peter failed Harry and he won't fail Dr. Conners.

That's my ideal theme to go with.

Nothing wrong with a great story about Peter Parker, just make Peter an interesting person to watch. Most of us enjoyed Iron man for the pieces that only involved Tony Stark. There are plenty of interesting movies about average guys out there, Parker could be fun to watch too even though he isn't a playboy billionaire. It's nice that they want a villain that'll be best for the story of Peter Parker, but they can really have a lot of fun creating amazing things from these sometimes 2 dimensional characters. I feel that Sandman might have been developed into the greatest of the villains thus far showcased in the movies if they had just focused on him. I don't care about the Uncle Ben thing really. Sometimes we do things in life for a reason, and later we find that our reason was a lie. Sure it's a little disappointing, but if you find a good thing from it, why quit? People act as though Parker has no reason for being Spider-man anymore.
You'll all shoot me for referencing this, but in TDK, Bruce Wayne held on to some of his strength to be the martyre at the end of the film because he thought Rachel was going to pick him over Dent. Should he find out the truth in the future (which he won't), sure he'd be ultra ticked and depressed, but would he quit being Batman? No. Parker isn't Bruce Wayne, but after 40 yrs worth of comics, we know that Peter would keep on keeping on.

Lizard should be the next big villain in the film and I'm not saying that because I'm a fan of him, I'm saying it because I think he'd fit in with Spidey/Peter's story as well.

if you listen to the Spider-Man 3 commentaries Raimi always wanted an aerial battle and were considering Vulture (Ben Kingsley). but my opinions for the 4th movie are Kraven and Lizard

An aerial battle between Vulture and Spider-Man would be very cool. It would be challenging to do for the fx/CGI people but it would be worth it because I don't think we've ever seen it yet in a movie (except briefly in Iron Man). Although, Spidey has to base all of his attacks around either Vulture or things that are up there in the air for him to use to try to stay high up.

what about harry vs. peter in spidey 3 in their first battle? that was semi-aerial... though i would still like to see vulture in a future spidey film

Yeah it was Semi-Aerial. It was really cool though. What I didn't get is why no one noticed there was a random guy just web slinging. No one noticing. Maybe they were too high up but I swear they could see the road and they weren' THAT high up. Maybe..idk. Anyway, the battle was cool and I liked it. And how useless peter got when harry cut his web off from mid flight.

Venom is not dead it just looks that way...venom is a symbiote and the guy who plays venom was nowhere to be found...you dont get blown up and not have remains. Hobgoblin is not funny, hobgoblin is the shiz haha. I'm just saying that if anything venom and carnage should be an ender.

look at it in slow motion man. eddie is vaporized. you can see his skeleton. also he wasn't wearing the symbiote. plus the symbiotes weakness is fire. you saw it burn to nothing.

Caveboy0, did you forget? Dr. Connors kept a sample of the Symbiote. I read that somewhere Peter did too for emergencies only, idk. But we all know Connors still has a sample of the symbiote.

Caveboy0
07-23-2009, 01:39 PM
eddie is dead deal with it. go watch that part again. i'll find a youtube video.

i know the symbiote is still alive, but eddie is not.

this is the deciding factor. Sam Raimi, the director, does not like the symbiotes thats why Venom was done so poorly because he was coaxed into doing a character he doesn't really understand or like.

if the director doesn't like the character why would be bring him back?

DualDier12
07-23-2009, 01:40 PM
You my friend can go ahead and calm down. That's not what he meant. And why in heaven are you cussing at him? You're being a bit of a douche (no offense)

And wow, the pic is not photoshoped. It's real. It's a screencap from the movie.

Yes, THEY could bring back a symbiote character. THEY could. Because Dr. Connors has a sample of the symbiote. But, if Raimi is directing, don't expect him to put in symbiotes. He doesn't like them.

aliensuit1495

not to mention not all of the symbiote left that metorite impact site;however, it would be easy to say that that would not be the same symbiote that attached to spidey or brock, a character well-established in the comics and done horribly in the movie.

btw, i was kidding on the photoshopped. get a clue.

Because the action of the movies isn't enough for a video game, especially since it will be missing a lot of the drama from the movies. So they need to fill the void by adding more encounters.
