View Full Version : GOBLIN COSTUME
It has to be said that the goblin armour looks good and the mask even better. What will be the Goblins weapons though? The glider is rumoured to be cool but stick with pumpkin bombs! It's the goblins trademark weapon!

Sorry YAZ, but I don“t like it, and I'm not the only one.
I belong to an unofficial spiderman fan club in mexico city and we are very disappointed about the GG costume. Why??
1.- The mask covers Defoe's face and minimize his performance, it's a shame because he's an excellent actor. 2.- The armor is totally green!! Is he naked or something?? what happen with the purple boots and the vest ?? The Green Goblin is one of the best spidey's enemys but here, he looks like a Power Ranger's monster.

I hope they reconsider the costume before the movie is released. I've liked Spider-Man since I was old enough to start collecting comic books. I'd hate to see them ruin this movie by making it into a recycled Power Rangers movie. I have a nephew who used to idolize the Power Rangers when he was little, but he can't stand them now. They're like Sesame Street. You outgrow them. The big difference between Sesame Street and Powers Rangers is you don't hate SS when you're older. PR you do. If they make this movie into a PR lookalike, it'll suffer the same fate.
After a closer look at the costume i now totally agree with you guys! Where is the purple boots, gloves and hat?Why must they ruin the goblin by making him look more robot than person? Thanks for makeing me notice and lets all hope that they'll make changes to the goblin!!

It's on the other Spider-Man website. The address is:
http://www.spidermanhype.com
Go to that site and look at how many days until the movie is scheduled to be released. I'd say they have plenty of time to change the costume.

i must agree with the whole power rangers thing. i am actually young enough to say that i have reached the stage where you hate the power rangers. the costume looks so robotic. the goblin has never looked like that and never should.

I think they should take the Ultimate Spiderman angle, He's just cool... kindof like the hulk... U know he'll regain his intelligence somehow... something good for one of the later sequels... (Later, Cause Venom has to b next!)

Simply it needs a LOT of work! The Green Goblin NEVER looked like an alien. Been a die hard Spidey Fan all my life, (5 tattooes, over 300 action figures, 2347 comics, books, pulps,etc...) the goblin needs to be worked on.

I've gotta say the Goblin costume was quite a shock, especially for me because I seen it personally up close. I got to spend three days as an extra on the Downey CA set. I heard two rumors, and I stress "rumors" going around the set that this was the first appearance of the Goblin in the movie, and that "other things" would be added later. Possibly that the Goblin would add to his costume in later appearances in the film, and / or that CGI work would be done to add a cape, and maybe a bag of tricks. All we can do is hope for something like this to get done.
If anyone else has heard of any news to support such a rumor, please let us all know.

I just saw the picture of the costume, SAM if you're reading these posts please..... don't screw up this movie. The costume is horrible, what ever happened to make up. I don't mind a little body armor, but the face looks like something right out of a low-budget science-fiction film. Go back to the drawing board guys, William Defoe is a good choice to play the character and we should see his acting abilities by makeup.

Well, looking at the pictures off SpidermanHype.com I cant help but think that they are going to tack on some CGI on where both costumes are concerned. Probably smooth out both characters to make them less awkward.
As for the color of GG, I heard that it is a multipigmented color. Green in light and deep purple in the shade.
And Spidey's eyes... well we know that all the shots of him that really count are gonna be CGI so I'm sure they will play with his eyes a bunch, after all with the detail they are putting into this picture, I can't believe they would leave his face so flat and ordinary.... you dig?
how they gonna make the goblins mouth move?cos by looks of the mask its gonna be stiff as a rock! Defoes a great actor and with a face scary enough to scare Venom!! How's he gonna be able to make his great facial expressions that are perfect for the goblin and a gone crazy Norman Osborn?the goblins an intellegent phsyco-path and Defoe's face does that alone,[get what i mean?] so why cover up a great actor who is more than capable of doing this part with just a simple costume? word about the cape is that its gonna be computour generated.
see ya!

They did this to hype, but all they are getting is dissed on the GG costume, it dose suck!!!
But you know what? Look what happened to Wolverine and the rest of our mutated friends, not only do they completely change the look, but they insult us by making a crack about the yellow spandex. But the money will come in. They are targering the little kids around the world and not the fans. That's why GG looks like a power ranger villian, because that's what KIDS know now a' days!!!
They're just suits making the decisions, but great job on Spiderman suit!!!!!!!!!! No one can deny they kept it real to a degree.

Hate to say it, but I agree with Mr. Skygoblin on his most recent post... I am just soooOo0ooo happy to be getting a Spi[)er-(V)an movie that I just can't be bothered squabbling about inconsequentials... Not that I'm trying to fly in the face of others who've posted their thoughts here, it's just that WE ARE GETTING WHAT LOOKS TO BE A WILD FILM! I personally feel and TRULY BELIEVE that whatever negative issues anyone has with the movie will be addressed and resolved once the movie is actually playing... it'll grow on you, guys, don't worry...!

I'm inclined to agree with most of you guys,...the Goblin is definitely not true to the comic. In fact,...he looks alot like the alien from Species! But,...we ARE getting a Spiderman movie,......I think at this point we should all hope for the very best in photoghaphy direction and the actual directing
itself. I'm just jazzed to be in the here and now to experience a real big screen movie of my all-time favorite superhero! I do, however, agree that Willem Dafoe is an outstanding actor and would have absolutely no problem with facial expressions for the Goblin! Has anyone ever seen that cheesy 80's flick with him and Michael Pare'?
It was called Streets of Fire, he played a pretty cool psycotic in that and his facials were perfectly matched with the character! Let's all groan out loud after we've seen the movie,..until then,..let us pray........................

FEAR ME, MORTALS!
You people SLAY me...I Swear to GOD...SO quick you all are to complain..."I don't like THIS" and "I don't like THAT"...Thing is, people, none of you can think beyond the ****ed comic book page. No, the Green Goblin's costume doesn't look like it does in the comic and thank GOD for that. It would look ridiculous. Give me a break...Little pointy purple booties and the keebler elf hat. Little purple speedos and the nekkid green legs. Are any of you thinking? Hmm?
What we have seen of the Goblin's costume thus far have been STILLS taken by set spies...We haven't seen it in action...We haven't seen it move or fly or throw a pumpkin bomb. Oh, and what about the Pumpkin bombs, hmm? They've shown pictures of them. When are you people gonna start to cry about THOSE looking too high-tech. "They don't LOOK like pumpkins" GOOD!
I would rather some high-tech bad *** throw BOMBS at the wall-crawler then have some reject from the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon throw exploding squash.
Think about it, folks. You are the same people who *****ed about (GASP!) Michael Keaton playing Batman and about the (OH, THE HORROR!) X-Men costumes being black leather instead of SPANDEX...SPANDEX, for god's sake. Wolverine would have looked like a bright yellow moron. Simple as that.
It's time we all put away the comic books and moved out of our mommie's basements and admit that some things simply do not work in a film...Will not work in a film. Face it, if people do things "more like the comic", we get "Batman and Robin". That was more "like a comic book", AND a disaster.
There is an ENORMOUS difference between novies and comics. I'm sure Mr. Raimi knows what he's doing because, well, he's a FILM MAKER.
We are simply geeks on a message board.

I'm a french Fan of Spider-man,and me too,I think the costume is not that I hope,In fact I think that if they colorize the Violet part, the Goblin was being better, for the face,it's normal that we mustn't see the face of Willem, the identity must be secret if we can regonize him,we lost the idea of the comics, but for the end of the movie they should did that the two are unmasked and the goblin die because of his jet glider and provoke a big BAOUM for a great end

WELL, the G.G. costume looks o.k. except it looks like something out of a Power Rangers Episode, but there isn't much you can do about it now except weep and moan . I would rather see the goblin costume as Alex Ross's concept ( a green figure of a reptilian like face shodowed by a torn, dark greyish hood and clothed in ripped dark gray clothing) that would look pretty cool for the movie. well, thats alll i have to say. EVen though what i'm saying wont change any thing its good to complain on something stupid every once in a while.

Most of all, I hope that the story-line and the acting speak for themselves. I hope that the GG's custume is the worst from this movie. I Really don't care about the custumes, i just pray for this movie to fill that need that all of us have been waiting for. I think, and hope, that these filmakers know and realize, what this movie means for all of us...
I pray that at the end of the movie I say, "what an ugly GG's custume", instead of saying, "**** that movie really really sucked".

Yeah I've seen it. Only in the photo's on the net. It looks far too to "Power rangerish". If you know what i mean. i have heard that they are going to insert some CG to the costume that you see, to produce a more meaner looking goblin.
I still think that the goblin should have a cloak of some sort.
If the goblin looks anything like that previous model on the net, then there definetly on to a winner.

One thing you guys a forgeting (and I've been a film student and have worked on some minor films)is that posibly the costume you see in those
photos are the stunt suite not De'foe. If you loke closely to the pic of De'foe geting into the costume with spidey there the color is much greener. So the mask your complaning about could possibly be the stunt man witch would be stiff. So there is hope yet.

Don't forget people that this isn't a comic book. The green goblin needs to some be able to believeably control the flier anyway. what better way than to have a robotic suit. it worked for iron man and it works for the green goblin. Making a mask out of makeup would just make the movie cartoonish. And we don't want that. What if he ended up lookin like blanka from the street fighter movie. I bet you that the makeup didn't work out. and I think the Mask is menacing as hell. and since norman osborn doesn't have super strength he needs the tech help so stop complaining.

for the most mart the costume does look great, that is until you get to the mask. It looks plain goofy! If they could go back and use common prosthetics and makrup for Defoes face it would be a perfect movie translation for the Goblin. His costume was originally made as a powered battle armor to increase his own strength and dexterity, and the mask was always flexible and form fitting, not bulky and immovable. This has got to be some kind of deterance for those of us on the web to not show us everything. I for one hope so or 20 years of devoted loyalty to spiderman through all the bs{clone saga, ben the real spiderman etc} will have been a large waste of time.

The goblin costume looks terrible yes but that is the costume he is wearing it will be enhance by cgi. go to http://www.spidermanhype.com and go to spider-media then the movie then characters then green goblin look at the drawing and the sculpture, the goblin looks great it is just that you have not seen any pics of his costume when it is over. I can't believe you people didn't know this. do you really think with the budget that Sam has he would really let it look like that please. learn the facts first before you make a thread with 65 posts cussing out something you haven't seen finished.

seeing as how the goblin sculpture is being used for filming [ the person's hand was mesuring the distance between the sculpture and the camera ] i breathed a sigh of relief. the goblin looks spectacular! keeping the traditional facial features and slick cool hat. the body armor only compliments it by making the goblin look menacing rather than funny looking [ i know it works in comics but in real life. .. take a look at the scooby doo movie which i think will also be great but mystery inc.'s clothes are a bit off style ]. so it looks like both hero and villain are going be fantastic.

GREEN GOBLIN IS PROBABLY THE WORST COMIC VILLIAN MOVIE COSTUME SINCE...ARNOLDS MR. FREEEZE.
THIS COSTUME REALLY SUX.HONESTLY.HIS MOUTH DONT EVEN MOVE.
AND FROM WHAT I READ THERES NO CGI FOR THE COSTUME IN THE MOVIE.
ANY WAY, TODAY WAS THE DAY OF THE CRAZY NESS OF THE WHOLE NY TERRORISTS THING. I THINK THE PART OF THE MOVIE WHERE SPIDEY HANGS THE HELICOPTER FROM THE TWIN TOWERS WILL NOW REALLY BE SYMBOLIC.

What are you people talking about? The costumes very good. Though I do have beef with the head gear.
The helmet in the photo is a bit too new and not enough like the original look. They definitely should have kept with the design from the mini-bust. More detail? Yes, go with it. Go for something horribly different? No way.
The mask of the Green Goblin is recognized around the world. Remember a little film called "Maximum Overdrive" by some crack pot named "Stephen King"? That Mack truck was menacing BECAUSE OF THE GREEN GOBLIN'S FRIGGIN' FACE ON THE FRONT.
And the costume also needs his trademark color scheme. Sure, given the name GREEN Goblin, the main color should be green. Yes, given to reason. But you NEED the secondary purple to give the costume depth and to keep it true to its roots.
Said my piece, now I'll be a good geek and go crawl into the fetal position in the corner of the chatroom due to the angry posts I will undoubtedly recieve.

If you were to give William Defoe pointed ears, Big Eyes, and color his skin green, his facial structure more closely resembles the Green Goblin. But this picture of this Green Goblin power ranger just WILL NOT DO! If you ever saw the Captain America movie you could see how cheesy deviation ruins comic storylines. (The X-Men movie handled this by confronting absurdity, and were brilliant the way they did). Fans will feel like this is such a bomb and numbly disappointed if the Goblin Ranger is used.

Personally I'm glad there's going to be a Spider-Man movie. But when someone waits over a year for a movie to be released, they don't want to think that they waited all that time just to be disappointed. Personally when I spend over a year getting anxious and worked up over a movie, I want it to be worth my time and money. The last picture I saw of The Green Goblin, he looked like a Power Rangers reject.
I personally think they should lose the armor suit all together and make Green Goblin like he was in the comic books. That is the only way you can truly respect the characters when doing a movie on them.
Jerry_S

I'm glad the movie is finally being made. But I would hate to think that I waited anxiously for over a year to see a movie that could turn out to be a Power Rangers wannabe.
If you're going to make a movie about a character, don't make the title character the only thing you do right. When I walk out of the theatre, I want to walk out thinking it was worth waiting this long for and that it was worth paying out good money for. However, I don't want to end up thinking "Man I'm disappointed in this movie. It was nothing more than a Power Rangers reject." I want to come out thinking "Man, that was a really cool movie. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD".
Respect the characters and leave them as they are or were in the comic books. Lose the armor on Green Goblin. Don't try to armor the characters up and make them into something they aren't. Or never were as far as that goes.

The goblin costume totally sucks. Hollywood selling out, trying to be "cool." Just like X-Men with black, leather outfits. When they do things like this they alienate the comic fans that have been supporting the industry for all these years, rather than build on that base.
I hope they reconsider the look. Are there any petitions going out there? if so, please let me know where and I'll definately sign it, promote it and pass it on.

The first thing I thought when I saw the GG costume was "OH NO". I have been anticipating this movie, ever since I read about it in Wizard magazine a while ago, and have been using the images located on the Spiderman movie website as a computer desktop because I love the Spiderman comics and have been a fan since I was 5. After seeing all the previous images with Spideys costume I was really psyched about the movie, but now since seeing the Green Goblin costume, I have a inescapable feeling of dread that this is going to suck.
I am really hoping that it does not, or I will be very sad indeed.

what they should add to the costume...
1) afro
2) gold chains
3) gold teeth
4) boom box
5) mc hammer pants
he should also rap and break-dance while in the costume. he should talk slang, to (i.e: zup, cuz, eat pumpkin bombz, beeee-ach!!!! west siiiiiiiiiide!!!!!)
that would definately be worth the 8 bucks!!!!! peace out!!!!0(*o*)0

fact-the GG costume as seen in the first official pic of GG looks horrible. don't even bother comparing it to the comic image. its apples and oranges.
what fans want is a costume that impresses the eyeball. the movie GG costume is just plain hard to look at without cringing. i think the alex ross version was the way to go. it was simple and realistic yet creepy. what the costume designers did to GG was overkill. they tried to make it so cool that it ended up looking absurd.
and YES, i agree that nobody wants spandex and purple boots but c'mon, honestly, does anyone really want power rangers? (sorry but it really is the best comparison)
i'll go see the flick and i'll tell my friends to go see it. i'll say that watchin spidey swing around town in impossible poses will be SO worth it, but i'm not gonna say they should shell out ten bucks for willem in a plastic, glossy goblin suit.
also, i hate the glider. another example of overkill

The costume isn't great, but it could have been far worse. Also, you have to consider that a character's look is influenced on more than just the costume itself. Delivery, body language, skill of action, and more factor into this, and it's really not fair to judge it until we actually see some clips of Dafoe in action. A good example here is Ray Park's Toad. He looked simply ridiculous in the promo pix, but in the actual movie, he looked great. All I'm saying is, don't condemn the character based on a static image.
That said, GG's not the first poor translation of comic-to-movie, costume-wise, nor is he the worst (c'mon, look at Batman and Robin.. NIPPLES?) Yet even poor costume jobs haven't meant a bad movie. Keaton's black-rubber Batman was pretty lame, as was the Phantom Zone villain costumes, and Toad's costume. Heck, look at Lex Luthor in Superman I, or the way they changed the entire CHARACTER of Harvey Dent from one Batman movie to another (Billy Dee Williams to Tommy Lee Jones). It can get ridiculous.
And a good costume doesn't necessarily mean a good movie. Arnie and Uma's costumes for Batman and Robin looked great, yet the movie is one of the all-time worst superhero movies ever. Xmen had costumes totally unlike their characters however, and that movie is one of the best superhero flix around.
I'm gonna see the movie, and I'll probably see it more than once. I"m also gonna get the DVD, and I"m going to revel in finally seeing one of my favorite superheroes making it to the big screen. The cast is accomplished, the director well-known for his action shows and movies, and Marvel's big-budget record is thus far flawless. I'm gonna look forward to this one...

hes all naked and his mouth doesnt move.
he need work. and the armor needs to go.

Look it's not negativity so lay off of the fans who are being let down, sky spider. All the points made about the GG's costume being taken in the wrong direction are completely valid. Many of us have waited for the better part of our lives to see this film happen and it's upsetting to have your best main villain recast as something out of a low budget, japanese, kid's soap operah just to try to draw in little kids to see this movie. It ruins it for the rest of us. I have no doubt that, for the most part, the film will be fun but I have serious doubts now about our main fight sceens. From a marketing standpoint, they want the villain to look like an x-treeme athleete (It's popular these days with the kiddies).
I just saw the clip with Goblin, and I'm not impressed. This whole ":Warriors come out and play" bit was weak at best.

You guys absolutely don't Know what you are talking about, the Green Goblin costume is GREAT! It is a vast improvement from the comics. The suit is all GREEN hence the name GREEN F.....ing Goblin. Why do you people say "he looks naked" when you know he is wearing body-armor?( You don't see the guys **** or anything) People you didn't say a **** thing when Batman came out in all black. So get of it! Its just a movie.
All so you guy complain about Dafoe "wearing a mask that covers his face that prevents him from acting."
Well, you guys think about this for a while then get back to me. YOU don't seem to have the same complaint when Tobey has to wear a mask over his head that totally keeps him from the audience to see his acting, why is that?

No wonder it took so long for this movie to get made. If you look in the press release media files on the site the main reason why it took so long to get this project into Sam Raimi's hands was because of legal battles. After this is all done, lets just hope the Power Rangers don't sue their butts off for stealing their idea for costumes.

Man what a ****.
I saw the first video of goblin...Geeezz it was AWFUL
to bad its to late to change it cause like someone mentioned they are not gonna spend a penny to reshoot.
Spideys costume looks better though.
And i hate when people say "...just be glad that we have a movie of spidey.." Man i was waiting for one too but not like this. It is really pathetic to hear that they are going to just accept it and feel lucky just to have a film. They made such a good job on the spidey costume and such a terrible on the gg costume.
I m not saying that to create an impression, sure iam gona see the film, im just really disappointed with the power ranger goblin. And it looked reallly bad on the video, hope in the film will look better with the added effects.
Daffoe would have made looked better in make up cause he just got the LOOKS !!!

If you ask me, what they should really do is keep the whole helmet Idea. However they should cut out the bottom part of the helmet so we can see Dafoe's maniacal and sadistic smile.

Whether is be comic books, toys, busts or posters....show me once where the Goblin is as hideous, fake and alien robotic looking as this. What are they basing this on?? Whily comics are a suspension of our reality and an escape into a fantasy, film is the exact opposite. Espcially for a character like Spiderman who is placed directly in our world! I mean, for goodness sake he lives in NY! So, don't you think with all the tight CG it would be rather, dare I say, *** to see this laughing hyena in a green and purple spandex costume?!?! I mean, what's more realistic? That, or the type of body armour that the filmakers opted for? I'd chose body armour any day. I also think Osborne would too. I mean, he's strong, but if he takes a direct blow from spidey...I don't know, I'd rather have the body armour. But compair the costumes. The Spidey costume is awesome, and standing next to this kiddie teletubby Green Goblin would make everyone but the die hard Spidey fans hate the movie! Just a thought.

Does anyone but me realize that the Green Goblin wears a mask in the comics? I mean, it's not like he paints his body green and wears purple undies. Realize people, that is a costume, just as the one in the movies. The only difference is that for the real word, the movie costume is a little more realistic. Just like the X-Men comics. Do you honestly think that people who own that fast butt jet like they do would run around in yellow spandex???!!! neither is the GG going to run around in Green body paint! The costume is pretty freaky looking. I mean, if I were the Goblin I'd want to freak people out, and that is the costume to do it. He's still green right? Quite complaining. If you keep complain', you'll miss having all the fun when the movie comes out becuase you'll be to busy complaining about the lact of purple undies!

Complaining about not seeing Dafoe's face is so redundant. I mean, Green Goblin DOES wear a mask in the comics. And if you guys expected to them to go with the Purple costume with the Purple hood and purple booties, you are kidding yourself. That would honestly look very cheesy in real life.
I'm indifferent about the costume. Of course I like the Green Goblin's costume in the comics, but before they even showed the costume I knew they would change it because it would look dorky in real life. I couldn't even imagine how dumb Wolverine would have looked in the X-Men movie if they gave him yellow tights.

I personally didn't like the green goblins costume. I think it was all at little to stiff. I also didn't like it how you could see his eyes when the eye protector things were on it was kinda freaky. The other costumes in the movie more than made up for it though.

I really liked the costume!!! I thought it was better than the cartoon/comic one, cos. . .
- it is more futuristic
- it covers his whole body (think about it, if the mask wasn't covering his entire face, every 1 would kno who he is)
-AND-
- it didn't have a cape (personally, i don't like the cape on him)
