View Full Version : Why not start a Marvel Network?

I think a great idea for marvel would be to invest in their own cable network. This way they could replay all the old cartoons, make new ones, and do live-action series without selling the rights to the character. They could even have the original creators and current writers working on the scripts. This would be the ideal setting for the Spider-man epic mini-series.

Ugh, no. Overexposure of franchises is what almost killed the company in the 90s.

True, but if Marvel owns and controls the network the will only be doing what other syndicated shows have done. And they will have full creative power. And as fred10 said there are many old series that could be rerun. It would be a perfect place to advertise trade shows and conventions. There could be talk shows and even art instruction shows. I think it's a great idea. Although I'm sure it got shot down in a board meeting for reasons stated above ;)

But honestly, with all the other cable networks out there, competition would prevent overexposure. The only people watching it would be the people who really want to. I think a comic book cable network would be just the right kind of exposure.

If this idea ever got batted down, it was because of cost, not over-exposure.

Proof positive: all the threads Fred10 has started haven't lessened his popularity ;)

Who would be a good T.V. actor to play Peter Parker in my epic mini-series that will be showing on the Marvel channel?

its an awesome idea fred10.. but i dont know if i could handle another version of spider-man. already there is hte main stream comic, there was the old tv shows (60's, 70's and 90's) and then there is the ultimate line, spider-girl, the new movie, and now the mtv series... thats like, 8 different spider-man's... i think a 9th would kill it for me.:(

As cool as having a weekly Spider-man live action tv show would be, and as much as I'd watch it, tape it, and probably quote it...it'd probably prove to be bad for Spider-man in the long run due to over saturation of the market. We gotta serve out our spider-man in bite sized doses for the "unitiated" general public

I'll let the movie franchise play out and the cartoon to lose it's popularity. Than I will wait until some other super hero has become very famous and than unfamous and THEN I will reintroduce Spidey as he should have been introduced to live-action in the first place. So I'm thinking fifteen or twenty years down the row.

great idea-- but would it work, long-term?

already, the TIME-WARNER empire pushes CARTOON NETWORK toons to the public-- what started off as a means to put old hanna-barbera stuff out there (as well as the pre-WWII Warner Bros stuff that ted turner owned at the time), ended up having new shows like justice league, dexter, etc.

a MARVEL-EXCLUSIVE network would have a big climb ahead of it--

consider this:
X-MEN EVOLUTION is already on in reruns on CN (show produced by Film-Roman, Inc.)

the Hanna-Barbera produced Fantastic Four cartoon airs occasionally on the network-- the episode/syndication rights are held by HB/Warner, while the character rights, are of course, Marvel's..

The syndication rights to the other marvel cartoons of the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's are ALL owned by DISNEY/BUENA VISTA-- the old-school marvel shows with the theme songs, the FF toon of 79, the spidey/hulk shows of the 80's, and the spidey/hulk shows of the 90's-- They already air on ABC FAMILY CHANNEL daily and on weekends--

on a side note, DISNEY digitally re-mastered the 60's spider-man episodes, added a new music score for each episode, and now broadcasts these 'enhanced' eps in overseas distribution-- but not here--

I think Marvel, as a company, is content to license the characters to show on other networks for now..

Though, I personally would LOVE to see a Marvel network-- It would be a great way to produce animated specials/series that are NOT tied to a specific movie, which seems to be the bottom-line justification nowadays-- let's face it, we're not gonna see MOON KNIGHT, CLOAK and DAGGER cartoon, etc. unless there's a movie..

in all honesty, a marvel network would kick ***, at first. it would begin as cartoon network did: classic shows, and some of it's own. then it'll start having the ratings fall as more and more people start to say " i've seen all these before, and change the channel. so then the network heads would begin to think about "what does the common guy want to see?" it'll ebentually be something made for the usual mundane person, not the comic book aficionado. i would watch the hell out of it, though, until i see "powerpuff X-girls" or some pop-influences horse-$#!T.

The thing about Marvel is that with all the money it will be making from these movies lately, they wouldn't have to rely on re-runs to get started like other networks have (eg. the cartoon network). They also don't have to spend as much time building and analyzing their market -- they already have a good idea of who they're catering to. Don't get me wrong, though, I would love to see those reruns. I think that a better network to compare a Marvel Network to other than the cartoon network would be the Sci-Fi channel.

you could start off with a public access Marvel network and grow from there, and turn out to be a big rich network executive someday.
