View Full Version : Raised Webbing on Spidey's Suit... how about body-armor

Folks,
As you know, in the comic book world the clothes do make the man.
I like the 3-D raised webbing on Spidey's constume. I think it looks a little bit heavy out side of perfect lighting, but I think it will look great on the silver screen AND in motion.
Question: Should spidey have body-armor like Batman did, have a non-sculpted suit like Superman, tights with padding?

The Spider-Man cast need to think about this.

Maybe a merge of the two...
Sculpted muscles in some spots, overlayed with fabric, and some chest body armor?
But Spidey does have to be flexible, and limber.

Remember, the suit in the comic was just fabric P.P. made on his own. The costume was simply a disguise. Not body armor to boost his abilities. However, for the purpose of a movie. A blend sculpted and non-sculpted is the best solution I can think of, but not with huge bulging muscles.
Body armor wouldn't be right for the web slinger. It was okay for Batman, cause he was a regular guy in a costume and couldn't doge bullets like Spider-Man. But Spider-Man has to be able to move quickly, freely, AND look good.
A non-sculpted suit wouldn't show enough muscle detail and the wrinkles make it look even more pathetic. Having the actor wear a tighter suit would avoid that problem, but then he'd look like a scrawny ballet dancer. A fully sculped suit would be overkill. It would look too strange to see "your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man" in full body armor swinging around NYC. It's too sluggish looking to be real, even for a movie.
As for the raised webbing... I dunno, I have mixed feeling about that. It looks cool in some light, but if the angle isn't perfect, it's an eye sore.

I think that spider-man's being warmer and closer to the reader comes from his being a human with physicological problems and also his vulnerability(both make him REAL). So I (a 20 year fan) insist that his costume should be fabric with no armour, padding etc...

I THINK THEY DID A GREAT JOB ON THE COSTUME, I'VE SEEN IT UP CLOSE AND IN BROAD DAYLIGHT AND IT LOOKS GREAT!!
THE SLIGHT BODY PADDING WORKS, YOU REALLY NEED IT TO ACCENT THE MUSCLES. A LITTLE BIT IN THE ARMS AND LEGS WOULD HAVE MADE IT EVEN BETTER..
THE RAISED WEBBING, ALONG WITH THE SILKSCREENED MATERIAL GIVE IT GREAT DIMENSION AND "FLOW".
....I THINK ITS A HOME RUN!!

You have a point... but I just can't see Spidey wearing a fur-lined suit! (Fur is SO out now anyhow)... Lets see.... Thinsulate lining?
There's a possibility!

I don't think body armor or any padding is a good idea. Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher did that in the Batman movies. What they failed to realize was thatin the comic books, Bruce Wayne had to train himself to perfection both mentally and physically. He had ttrained himself to the point that he had exceptionally sharp instincts & reflexes, and had detective skills to rival Sherlock Holmes. He was also in tiptop physical condition and was a black belt in martial arts. His only protection was a cape that served as a flame retardant. In the movies, he was well protected in body armor and was in no real danger. He had to tilt his whole body back in order to look up. It was more like a joke to me.
Spider-Man has acquired the agility of a spider, the spider sense, etc.. If they suit him up in armor and/or any protective gear he won't be very agile. He won't have to dodge any bullets, knives, etc. if he's wearing armor. If he wears body armor or any padding in the movie, then the movie will lose alot of what makes Spider-Man great in the comic books. But then that's just my opinion. I hope they make him out like he is and has been in the comics since the 1960's.
They didn't mess with Superman's costume whe Christopher Reeve wore it. Those movies are still popular to this day. Well, the first two are anyway.

That was always a major part of Spidermans character. He was a normal person. He was poor, he could get hurt and YES he was out in that bitter, bitter cold, rain and so forth, quite often doing what he does.
The Spiderman costume might look a little silly in still shots, but it's the movement and/or "action shots" that bring it to life. It looked awesome in the teasar trailer.
I think the raised webbing costume is *perfect.*
Just my two cents.

Jerry_S,
How long have you been comicbook fan? Looks like you know a little about the 'old school' when heroes were in real danger.
